## Introduction

Twentieth-century European arts emphasized experimentation because older artistic forms seemed too limited for a changed world. Industrialization, mass politics, urban crowds, new technologies, and above all the shock of world war made many artists feel that inherited styles could no longer explain modern life. In **architecture**, experimentation often looked more orderly than in painting or Dada. That is an important distinction. Some modernists reacted to modernity with irrationality; architects often responded with functional design. It rejected excessive ornament and stressed usefulness, clean lines, and design suited to industrial society.

### How to use this topic in AP exam answers

On AP European History, this topic works best when used comparatively and with context. A weak answer lists movements. A strong answer links movement, method, and historical cause.

For an **SAQ**, use a movement plus one concrete figure or work. For example: “Cubism, seen in Picasso’s _Les Demoiselles d’Avignon_ (1907), rejected Renaissance perspective in order to represent modern reality through fragmentation.”

For an **LEQ or DBQ**, build a line of reasoning:

1. traditional forms lost authority
2. modern conditions created disorientation
3. different media answered that crisis in different ways

You can also compare optimistic and critical responses to modernity. **Dada** treated modern civilization as absurd and corrupt. **Bauhaus** tried to design a more rational, useful modern environment. Both were experimental, but not in the same spirit.
