## Introduction

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many Europeans believed that they were living through an age of rapid improvement. New medicines reduced disease, electricity changed cities, faster communication linked people and markets, and engineering projects seemed to show that nature itself could be mastered. A strong answer must do more than say Europeans liked science. You need to explain why scientific optimism grew, who found it persuasive, and why that confidence was already facing criticism before World War I.

### Why science and technology seemed to prove progress

Many Europeans trusted science and technology because daily life was visibly changing for the better. This trust was not abstract. It came from practical results people could see in streets, homes, workplaces, and hospitals.

The **Second Industrial Revolution** played a major role. Earlier industrialization had already transformed production, but the later phase added electricity, chemicals, steel, improved transport, and faster communications. These changes made modern life appear more efficient, more predictable, and more comfortable. If streets were lit at night, factories produced more goods, and messages crossed long distances quickly, it was easy to believe that history was moving forward.

This faith in progress was especially strong among educated and middle-class Europeans. Do not claim that all Europeans were equally optimistic. Urban professionals and middle-class reformers often embraced progress more strongly than poorer rural communities.

Medical progress made scientific authority even more convincing. Earlier Europeans had lived with regular epidemics and weak medical treatment. By the late nineteenth century, scientists such as **Louis Pasteur** and **Robert Koch** made major advances in **germ theory**. If disease could be explained by microbes rather than mystery or divine punishment, then science seemed able to solve one of humanity’s oldest problems.

Pasteur helped show that microbes caused disease and explained how vaccination worked. They helped justify urban sanitation, cleaner water supplies, and more confident public health policy. Students often miss this step: science gained authority not just because it explained nature, but because it made governments and doctors look more effective.

Public sanitation reinforced the same belief. Sewers, cleaner water, and more systematic rubbish removal reduced disease in many cities. So the chain of reasoning looked like this:

- cities became healthier
- people concluded that reason and expertise improved life

That is a strong AP causation chain.

### Positivism, secularism, and the authority of experts

Scientific optimism also had an intellectual side. It was supported by the belief that reliable knowledge came from observation, evidence, and method rather than from tradition alone.

Positivism mattered because it extended scientific habits beyond laboratories. If nature could be understood by careful observation, then perhaps society could too. This outlook pushed Europe further toward **secularism**. That did not mean religion vanished. Many Europeans remained religious, and churches still mattered. But scientific explanations increasingly competed with religious ones in public life. Doctors, engineers, statisticians, and researchers gained status once held more securely by clergy and inherited authorities.

The growth of modern social sciences also fits here. Nineteenth-century scholars increasingly tried to study human society with methods borrowed from science. Even where these fields were not exact sciences, they reflected the same confidence that careful observation could produce trustworthy knowledge.

Yet there was also a harder edge to this trend. The prestige of science could be misused. Some thinkers applied biological language to human society in crude and political ways.

This is an essential distinction. **Charles Darwin** proposed a biological explanation of natural selection. **Social Darwinism** was not the same thing. Scientific thinking also became more specialized and harder for ordinary people to follow. By the turn of the century, discoveries by figures such as **Max Planck**, **Marie Curie**, and **Albert Einstein** expanded the prestige of science even further, but they also made the universe seem less simple than earlier generations had thought. That tension is important: science still commanded respect, yet it no longer always produced easy certainty.

### World’s Fairs, modern life, and public celebration of technology

Trust in science was not confined to intellectuals. It was displayed to the public in dramatic ways. The best examples are the **World’s Fairs** and international expositions.

The **Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889** celebrated the centennial of the French Revolution and showcased engineering and industry. Its most famous symbol was the **Eiffel Tower**. At first controversial, it soon became a sign of modern engineering power. The message was clear: metal, calculation, and technical skill could produce a new kind of beauty and a new kind of society.

The **Paris Exposition of 1900** continued this public display of confidence. Visitors encountered electric lighting, machinery, transport systems, and products that suggested a future shaped by invention. These events turned science into spectacle. They taught ordinary visitors to associate technology with progress, national prestige, and civilization.

Why does that matter? Because expositions did political work. They were not only entertainment. They made modernity feel desirable and visible. They told visitors that Europe, and especially western Europe, stood at the front of human advancement.

Other technologies strengthened the same impression. The **telegraph** and **telephone** accelerated communication. Railways and later automobiles increased mobility. **Marconi’s wireless telegraphy** suggested that distance itself was becoming less important. Even **Zeppelin airships** seemed to show human command over the air before airplanes fully changed warfare and travel.

Scientific discoveries also had symbolic force. **Marie Curie’s** work on radioactivity, following **Henri Becquerel’s** discovery in **1896**, suggested that science was still opening entirely new frontiers. To many observers, each new discovery supported the wider belief that human reason could keep pushing knowledge forward.

### Why this optimism was already under strain before 1914

A strong AP answer must add complexity. Many Europeans trusted science and technology, but this confidence was never complete or universal. Before World War I, important thinkers and artists were already exposing its limits.

Modernist thinkers questioned whether reason alone could explain human life. **Friedrich Nietzsche** attacked inherited moral certainty and famously declared that “God is dead,” meaning older religious foundations no longer held the same authority. **Sigmund Freud** argued that human behaviour was shaped by the unconscious, not just rational thought. **Henri Bergson** valued intuition and lived experience over strict rational analysis.

Artists expressed similar tension. Works such as **Edvard Munch’s** _The Scream_ (**1893**) showed anxiety, alienation, and psychological strain instead of calm order. Later styles such as **Expressionism** moved away from simply representing the visible world and tried to show inner emotional truth.

This is not the same as rejecting science outright. Modernists often lived in the same modern world shaped by science and industry. Their point was that human beings were not as rational, stable, or predictable as positivists hoped.

So the best historical judgement is this: before **1914**, many Europeans did trust science and technology as engines of improvement, but modernist culture increasingly challenged the belief that reason could fully explain or heal modern life.

World War I later shattered much of the earlier optimism because the same industrial and scientific capacity that promised improvement also produced machine guns, poison gas, heavy artillery, and mass death. But for this subtopic, the key point is that doubt existed even before the war. The war deepened a crisis that had already begun.
