### What the shape of the PPC tells you

A PPC can have different shapes, and each shape has a meaning. The most important AP distinction is between a bowed-out curve and a straight-line curve.

A bowed-out PPC means that as an economy produces more of one good, it must give up larger and larger amounts of the other good. This is called **increasing opportunity cost**.

Why does this happen? Because resources are usually specialized. Workers, land, and capital are not equally good at making everything. Some resources are better at producing one good than another.

The loss of wheat is small. But if the economy keeps shifting toward machinery, eventually it must pull in resources that are much better at growing wheat than building machines. Now each extra machine costs a lot more wheat.

That is the real cause of the bowed-out shape: resources are **not equally adaptable**.

The opportunity cost rises from 1 to 5 robots. That is increasing opportunity cost, so the PPC is bowed out.

Notice the chain of reasoning:

3. Eventually less suitable resources are used for pizza
4. Larger robot losses are required
5. Opportunity cost rises
6. The PPC is bowed out

That is the explanation AP readers want.

> **Test Tip:** Do not say a bowed-out PPC happens "because of scarcity." Scarcity explains why trade-offs exist at all, but the _curvature_ is explained by specialized resources and increasing opportunity cost.

### Straight-line PPCs and constant opportunity cost

A straight-line PPC means the economy gives up the same amount of one good every time it produces more of the other. The slope stays the same all along the curve.

Suppose a PPC table looks like this:

Why would this happen? Only if resources are equally adaptable between the two goods. In other words, resources moved from one sector to the other are just as productive in their new use as in their old use.

That is much less realistic for a whole economy, which is why real-world PPCs are usually bowed out. But AP questions still use straight-line PPCs to test whether you recognize constant opportunity cost.

### How to calculate and interpret PPC slope on the exam

On AP questions, opportunity cost may come from a graph or a table. In either case, calculate it as:

If you are finding the opportunity cost of the horizontal-axis good, divide the loss in the vertical-axis good by the gain in the horizontal-axis good.

The opportunity cost rises from 2/3 to 1 to 5/3 butter per gun. So this PPC is bowed out and shows increasing opportunity cost.

A second way AP questions test this is with slope language. On a bowed-out PPC, the absolute value of the slope gets larger as you move toward producing more of one good. That means the curve gets steeper, and the opportunity cost rises.

Common student errors:

- Reporting slope as negative opportunity cost instead of using the positive sacrifice amount
- Reversing the fraction and calculating gained over lost
- Saying a bowed-out curve shows constant opportunity cost
- Confusing "concave to the origin" with "curved inward" in ordinary language

### Shape versus movement versus shifts

One of the easiest mistakes is confusing PPC shape with PPC position. These are different ideas.

The **shape** tells you whether opportunity cost is increasing or constant.

A **movement along** the PPC means the economy reallocates existing resources between the two goods. Productive capacity stays the same; only the mix changes.

A **shift** of the entire PPC means productive capacity changes because resources, technology, or productivity change.

So if a question asks why a PPC is bowed out, the answer is not "because technology improved" or "because the labor force grew." Those are causes of a shift, not of the curve's shape.

Likewise, if unemployment falls and the economy moves from inside the PPC to a point on the PPC, the curve does not shift. The economy just becomes more efficient.
