## Introduction

From c. **1200 to c. 1450**, South and Southeast Asia were shaped by the interaction of three major religious traditions: **Hinduism**, **Islam**, and **Buddhism**. For AP World, this topic is not mainly about theology. It is about how religions moved, how rulers used them, and how they affected trade, social life, and political power.

A strong answer on this topic must do two things. First, it must use specific regional examples. Second, it must explain both **change** and **continuity**. Islam expanded in many places, but Hinduism and Buddhism did not disappear. Older beliefs stayed important, even as new ones spread.

### South Asia: Islam enters, Hinduism endures

South Asia in this period was politically divided, but it remained a major cultural center. **Hinduism** and **Buddhism** had spread outward from India long before 1200, and Hindu social structures, especially caste, remained deeply rooted. The major political change came with the rise of the **Delhi Sultanate** in **1206**.

The Delhi Sultanate matters because it marks the durable establishment of Islamic political power in India. Muslim rulers had entered the subcontinent before, but the sultanate created a lasting connection between India and the wider **Dar al-Islam**. This changed politics, military organization, and urban culture.

The AP exam often tests a careful distinction here: Islam in South Asia spread partly through **conquest and state rule**, not only through trade. The early sultans sometimes governed harshly. Some Hindu temples were destroyed, and non-Muslims could be required to pay the **jizya**, a tax on non-Muslims. But AP answers should avoid saying that all Hindu-Muslim relations were always hostile. There was also accommodation, cooperation, and everyday coexistence.

Many Hindus continued practicing their faith under Muslim rule. In southern India, Hindu traditions remained especially strong. This is where the **Vijayanagara Empire**, founded in **1336**, becomes important as evidence of continuity and resistance.

Vijayanagara shows that Islam’s expansion did not erase Hindu political power. A strong comparison point is this: the Delhi Sultanate represents Islamic state-building in the north, while Vijayanagara represents the continuing force of Hindu rule in the south.

The **Bhakti movement** is one of the most useful cultural developments for this topic.

Bhakti mattered because it made Hindu devotion more accessible. It stressed emotional connection to a deity, often **Vishnu** or **Shiva**, and could appeal beyond priestly elites. It also challenged caste exclusiveness, though it did not destroy the caste system. That is an important AP distinction: **Bhakti criticized hierarchy more than it eliminated it**.

At the same time, Islam spread not only through rulers and armies, but also through **Sufism**.

In India, Sufi teachers often gained followers through charity, hospitality, and direct spiritual appeal. This made Islam attractive to people beyond court elites. The **Chishti** order is a useful example, especially because it became known for tolerance and service.

A good AP argument, then, is that Islam in South Asia spread through **both coercive and non-coercive means**. The state mattered, but so did devotional religion.

One strong example of syncretic culture is **Kabir**, a fifteenth-century poet.

Kabir is useful because he shows that religious boundaries could blur. He did not simply choose one side. He challenged empty ritual in both traditions and stressed inward devotion instead. This is excellent evidence for essays about cultural exchange.

> **Test Tip:** In SAQs and LEQs, avoid saying “Islam replaced Hinduism in India.” A stronger claim is that Islam became politically important in northern India, while Hinduism remained socially and culturally powerful across much of the subcontinent.

### Southeast Asia: Hindu-Buddhist courts and Buddhist mainland states

Southeast Asia must be divided into **mainland** and **maritime** zones. This distinction is essential for AP World.

On the mainland, earlier Indian influence remained powerful. States borrowed religious ideas, artistic forms, and political models from South Asia. The **Khmer Empire** is the clearest example.

The best-known monument is **Angkor Wat**, built as a Hindu temple and later associated with Buddhism. This is excellent evidence for how rulers used religion to display power and legitimacy.

Angkor Wat matters for several reasons. It shows Indian cultural influence in Southeast Asia. It shows how rulers used monumental architecture to support kingship. It also shows continuity across religions, because a single major site could shift from one religious emphasis to another over time.

Mainland Southeast Asia also became increasingly associated with **Theravada Buddhism**.

Theravada spread through a chain that AP students should know clearly: **India to Sri Lanka to mainland Southeast Asia**. Sri Lanka acted as the key transmission center, providing texts, monastic lineages, and authority. This means you should not simply say that Theravada spread directly from India alone.

States such as **Pagan** in Burma and **Sukhothai** in Thailand supported Theravada Buddhism. Rulers gained legitimacy by presenting themselves as righteous Buddhist kings, while monasteries helped unify society.

Theravada Buddhism also appealed to common people because it did not depend on caste. That gave it broad social appeal in areas where Hindu court culture had previously been strong.

So, for mainland Southeast Asia, the key pattern is this: **older Hindu-Buddhist court culture remained important, but Theravada Buddhism became especially influential in kingship and social life**.

### Maritime Southeast Asia: trade-driven Islam and lasting Hindu-Buddhist power

Maritime Southeast Asia developed differently. Here, the major story is the spread of Islam through port cities and sea trade.

Muslim merchant diasporas from **Arabia**, **Persia**, and **India** settled in ports across Southeast Asia. These traders brought not only goods but also law, ritual, language, and cultural prestige. Local rulers often converted to Islam because it strengthened trade links and diplomatic standing in the wider Indian Ocean world.

The clearest early example is **Samudra Pasai** in northern Sumatra.

Samudra Pasai is strong evidence that Islamization in maritime Southeast Asia was connected to commerce. AP students can use the **1297** Arabic-inscribed royal tomb there as specific evidence of an established Muslim ruling class.

Later in the period, **Malacca** became even more important.

Malacca sat on one of the most important chokepoints in world trade. Because merchants from across Afro-Eurasia passed through it, conversion there brought economic and political advantages. This is a key AP comparison point: **Islam in maritime Southeast Asia spread mainly through trade and ruler conversion, not primarily through conquest**.

At the same time, maritime Southeast Asia did not become uniformly Muslim during this period. The **Majapahit Empire**, based on Java, remained strongly shaped by Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Majapahit is the major counterexample students need. Even while Islam spread in port cities and coastal trading zones, Hindu-Buddhist states remained politically and culturally powerful inland and across island networks.

This lets you write a strong continuity-and-change argument:

- **Change:** Islam expanded through maritime trade networks
- **Continuity:** Hindu-Buddhist traditions remained powerful in states like Majapahit
  > **Test Tip:** If an exam question asks about Islam in Southeast Asia, mention trade, merchant diasporas, and ruler conversion. If you focus only on conquest, you are probably describing South Asia more than maritime Southeast Asia.

### Comparison and exam argument: what changed, what stayed the same

This subtopic is often tested through comparison or causation. The most useful comparison is between **South Asia** and **maritime Southeast Asia**.

In **South Asia**, Islam spread through:

- conquest
- political rule
- urban administration
- Sufi missionary influence

In **maritime Southeast Asia**, Islam spread through:

- Indian Ocean trade
- merchant diasporas
- local elite conversion
- Sufi adaptation to local customs

That distinction is one of the highest-value ideas for AP revision.

Another useful comparison is between **mainland** and **maritime Southeast Asia**:

- **Mainland Southeast Asia** is more closely linked to **Theravada Buddhism**
- **Maritime Southeast Asia** is more closely linked to the spread of **Islam in port cities**

At the same time, there are continuities across the whole region. Rulers in both South and Southeast Asia used religion to **legitimate power**. Temples, mosques, monasteries, and shrines were political as well as religious spaces. Monumental buildings such as **Angkor Wat** were meant to impress subjects and reinforce authority. Muslim rulers in India and maritime Southeast Asia also used religion to strengthen state power and external trade ties.

This topic also fits the AP themes of:

- **ECN** — trade networks spread beliefs and linked religious change to commerce

For a DBQ or LEQ, a good thesis might argue that religious change in South and Southeast Asia from c. 1200 to c. 1450 was significant, but uneven. Islam spread strongly in northern India and maritime ports, while Hinduism and Buddhism remained deeply rooted, especially through states such as Vijayanagara, Khmer, and Majapahit.
