## Introduction

After **1945**, the global balance of power began to shift away from Europe. The same war that defeated fascist states also damaged the prestige, finances, and military strength of the old imperial powers. Colonized peoples in Asia and Africa had already been resisting foreign rule, but after World War II those movements became harder to suppress and easier to justify.

For AP World History, this topic matters because it combines several themes at once: **governance**, **economic systems**, **social organization**, and **cultural interactions**. It also connects directly to major exam skills. Students are often asked to explain causes, compare different routes to independence, or trace how one global process such as war reshaped later politics.

## Introduction

Postwar decolonization was not one single event. It was a long process that took placeed from the 1940s through the 1970s, and it looked different in different regions. Some empires negotiated withdrawal. Others fought bitter wars to hold on to territory. In almost every case, though, anti-imperialism grew because empire had become weaker, less legitimate, and more costly to maintain.

### Why World War II changed the fate of empires

World War II did not create anti-colonialism from nothing. Resistance to empire had existed for decades. What the war did was accelerate existing pressures and remove many of the advantages that European powers had once relied on.

First, the war weakened Europe materially. Britain, France, and the Netherlands emerged from the conflict exhausted, indebted, and dependent on reconstruction. Holding distant colonies required soldiers, ships, administrators, and money. After 1945, all of those were in shorter supply. An empire that had seemed profitable before the war could now look like a burden.

Second, the war damaged the image of European superiority. Imperial rule had often been justified by claims that Europeans were stronger, more advanced, and more capable of governing. But Japan’s wartime victories in Southeast Asia shattered that image. When the Japanese drove European powers out of colonies such as the Dutch East Indies and French Indochina, colonized peoples saw that European rulers were not invincible. That psychological shift mattered. If an empire can be beaten, it can be removed.

Third, colonial soldiers and workers gained experience during the war. Men from India, Africa, and Southeast Asia served in imperial armies or wartime labour systems. They learned military discipline, political organization, and the language of rights and sacrifice. Many returned asking a simple question: if we fought for freedom, why do we still live under foreign rule?

A fourth change was ideological. The postwar world increasingly used the language of freedom, human rights, and self-government. This made empire harder to defend, especially for Britain and France, which claimed to be fighting for liberty in World War II. Colonial subjects noticed the contradiction between anti-fascist rhetoric and imperial reality.

The **Atlantic Charter** of **1941**, issued by Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, was especially important as a symbol. Britain did not mean to promise immediate independence to its colonies, but many colonial nationalists read its language about peoples choosing their own government as support for their cause. On exams, this is a useful example of how ideas can escape the intentions of the people who first stated them.

> **Test Tip:** For causation questions, avoid saying "World War II caused decolonization" as if nothing else mattered. Stronger answers say the war was a major accelerant of existing nationalist and anti-colonial movements.

### Nationalism, the United Nations, and the new postwar climate

If World War II weakened empire from above, nationalism attacked it from below. Nationalist leaders argued that people with a shared identity, territory, and political future should rule themselves rather than be controlled by outsiders. This was not just emotional language. It became a practical political program through strikes, protests, negotiations, guerrilla warfare, and diplomatic pressure.

The **United Nations**, founded in **1945**, helped make colonialism look less legitimate. The UN Charter included support for self-determination, and the organization gave colonized and newly independent peoples a place to appeal to world opinion. In **1960**, **UN Resolution 1514**, the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, demanded a speedy end to colonial rule. For AP purposes, that date is highly useful because it shows how explicit anti-colonial language had become.

This did not mean the UN directly liberated colonies. Nationalist movements still did the hard political and military work on the ground. But the UN changed the diplomatic environment. Colonial rulers now faced pressure not just at home and in the colony, but also in international politics.

The **United States** and **USSR** also criticized old European imperialism, though usually for strategic reasons. The USSR opposed colonialism because it presented itself as anti-capitalist and anti-imperial. The United States often spoke in favour of self-government but was inconsistent, especially when anti-colonial movements seemed too radical or too close to communism. That inconsistency is important. Students often confuse anti-imperialism with moral purity; in reality, Cold War powers usually calculated advantage first.

### Different paths to independence: negotiation, partition, and war

One of the most important distinctions in this topic is that decolonization took different forms. AP questions often reward students who compare routes to independence rather than treating all cases as the same.

**India** is the clearest example of negotiated independence mixed with tragedy. British rule had been under pressure for decades from the **Indian National Congress**, figures such as **Mohandas Gandhi**, and later **Jawaharlal Nehru**. By the end of World War II, Britain recognised it could not hold India indefinitely. Independence came in **1947**, but not as a simple transfer of power. Instead, **partition** created **India** and **Pakistan**.

Partition shows that independence was not always peaceful in its consequences even when it was largely negotiated in its method. The division triggered mass migration, communal violence between Hindus and Muslims, and more than a million deaths. That makes India a strong example for exam answers because it shows both the strength and the limits of anti-colonial nationalism.

**Ghana**, independent from Britain in **1957** under **Kwame Nkrumah**, is often used as a contrasting case. Ghana’s transition was more peaceful and is often seen as an early model of sub-Saharan African decolonization. In a comparison essay, India and Ghana can both represent negotiated or mostly nonviolent independence, though India’s aftermath was far more violent.

By contrast, **Indonesia**, **Vietnam**, **Algeria**, and **Kenya** show how decolonization could become a war.

In **Indonesia**, **Sukarno** declared independence in **1945** after the Japanese occupation weakened Dutch control. The Netherlands did not willingly accept this declaration. Armed conflict followed until Dutch recognition in **1949**. Indonesia is a good case because it combines diplomatic struggle and military resistance rather than fitting neatly into one category.

In **Vietnam**, **Ho Chi Minh** declared independence in **1945** after Japanese collapse. France tried to restore colonial rule, leading to the **First Indochina War**. French defeat at **Dien Bien Phu** in **1954** ended the war, but Vietnam was temporarily divided, and the decolonization struggle then merged into the Cold War. Vietnam is therefore one of the strongest examples for showing how anti-imperialism and superpower rivalry became entangled.

**Algeria** is a classic case of violent decolonization. France treated Algeria not merely as a colony but as part of France, and the large settler population made withdrawal harder. The **FLN** fought a brutal war from **1954** to **1962**, using guerrilla warfare and terrorism, while France responded with severe repression. Students should remember Algeria as a textbook example of why settler colonies often decolonized more violently.

**Kenya** also illustrates the role of settler colonialism. The **Mau Mau Uprising** from **1952** to **1960** was tied to land, race, and political exclusion. Kenya gained independence in **1963**, but not before insurgency and repression had made the process violent.

> **Test Tip:** If asked to compare decolonization, a reliable structure is: negotiated/mostly nonviolent cases such as India and Ghana versus violent or armed cases such as Algeria, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Kenya.

### Why settler colonies were often more violent

A point students often miss is that the type of colony mattered. In a settler colony, colonizers had not only political power but also homes, farms, and social roots in the territory. That made compromise harder. In places such as Algeria, Kenya, and later South Africa, white settlers feared losing land, privilege, and identity. They therefore resisted majority rule more fiercely than colonial administrators in some other territories did.

This is why saying "Britain usually left peacefully" is too simple. Britain did negotiate withdrawal in some places, but settler interests and local conditions often produced violence anyway. Similarly, saying "France fought harder" is broadly useful but should be tied to examples such as Algeria and Vietnam.

### Bandung, Afro-Asian solidarity, and nonalignment

Newly independent states did not want merely to survive. Many also wanted to shape world politics on their own terms. The **Bandung Conference**, held in **Indonesia** from **April 18–24, 1955**, was a major symbol of that ambition.

Bandung mattered because it showed that Africa and Asia were no longer just objects of diplomacy. They were trying to become actors in diplomacy. Leaders such as **Sukarno**, **Nehru**, **Gamal Abdel Nasser**, and **Nkrumah** promoted cooperation among newly independent states and opposed both colonialism and racial domination.

However, Bandung was not the same as the **Non-Aligned Movement**.

Bandung was a conference in **1955**. The **Non-Aligned Movement** was formally created later, in **1961** at **Belgrade**. They are related, but not identical. A strong AP answer makes that distinction clearly. Anti-colonialism meant resisting empire; nonalignment meant trying not to become dependent on either Cold War superpower. A country could be anti-imperial without remaining truly nonaligned.

### Decolonization did not end outside influence

Students should also think about consequences, not just independence itself. Formal empire often ended, but outside pressure remained. Many new states inherited borders drawn by colonial rulers, export economies focused on a few raw materials, and weak political institutions. Some also became sites of Cold War intervention.

This is why historians sometimes speak of **neocolonialism**: formal sovereignty without full economic or political independence from outside powers. For AP World, you do not need to treat neocolonialism as the main story here, but it is a valuable qualifying point in essays. Empire dissolved, yet unequal influence continued.

Vietnam is one example. Congo and Angola later became others. Even where superpowers offered aid, that aid often came with conditions. New nations could gain weapons, loans, or diplomatic support, but also risked becoming proxy battlegrounds.
