LFO depth is part of effects processing because it controls the strength of movement in many modulation effects. It is especially relevant when you use chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, vibrato, auto-pan or filter modulation in your mix.

Introduction
Many effects create movement by changing a parameter repeatedly over time. A chorus might gently vary delay time to create width, a tremolo might repeatedly raise and lower volume, and an auto-pan might move a sound left and right across the stereo field. The repeating control signal that drives this movement is often an LFO.
LFO depth is the setting that decides how far the movement goes. Low depth gives a subtle effect; high depth makes the modulation more obvious. In recording and mixing, this is a key practical control because it can make a part feel wider, warmer and more alive, but it can also make a performance sound seasick, unstable, out of tune or badly balanced.

A low-frequency oscillator: a repeating control signal, usually below the range of audible pitch, used to modulate another parameter such as pitch, volume, delay time, pan position or filter cutoff.
How LFO Depth Controls Modulation Amount
An LFO does not normally create the sound you hear directly. Instead, it moves another parameter. For example, if the LFO is assigned to volume, the result is tremolo. If it is assigned to pitch, the result is vibrato. If it is assigned to delay time, it can help create chorus or flanging.
LFO depth controls the size of that movement. Imagine a filter cutoff frequency set around a central point. With low depth, the LFO only nudges the cutoff slightly above and below that point, giving a gentle tone change. With high depth, the cutoff sweeps much further, creating a more dramatic wah-like sound.

The amount or intensity of modulation applied by an LFO. Higher depth means the controlled parameter moves further from its starting or centre value.
Depth is often shown as a percentage, such as 0–100%. However, some effects display it in more specific units. A vibrato may show depth in cents or semitones because it is changing pitch. A chorus or flanger may show depth in milliseconds because it is changing delay time. A tremolo may show depth as a percentage because it is changing volume.
Do not confuse depth with rate. Rate controls how fast the LFO cycles. Depth controls how far it moves the parameter during each cycle. A slow, deep tremolo gives large volume changes at a slow speed. A fast, shallow tremolo gives small volume changes at a fast speed. They are different aspects of the effect.

A useful way to think about it is:

For Edexcel work, you do not usually need to calculate exact LFO values. You do need to explain what a setting would do to the sound. For example: “Increasing the LFO depth on the tremolo would make the volume rise and fall more dramatically, producing a stronger pulsing effect.”
Test Tip: If you are asked about LFO depth, write about the amount of change, not the speed of change. Speed is rate. Intensity or range of movement is depth.
LFO Depth in Common Modulation Effects
LFO depth appears in many modulation effects. The exact sound depends on which parameter is being moved.

The process of changing one audio parameter over time using another signal or control source, such as an LFO or envelope.
In a chorus effect, the processor mixes the dry signal with one or more very short delayed copies. The delay time is slightly varied by an LFO, causing small pitch and timing changes. Low LFO depth creates a gentle thickening or widening effect. High depth makes the pitch movement more obvious, which can sound lush on a synth pad but unstable on a lead vocal.

On electric guitar, chorus depth can make a clean part sound wide and glossy, especially in 1980s-style pop or rock. On backing vocals, a small amount may add spread. On a lead vocal, too much depth can make the singer sound out of tune, even if the original take was accurate.
A flanger also uses a short delay, but usually with shorter delay times and often feedback. This creates a sweeping comb-filter effect. LFO depth controls how far the sweep travels. Low depth gives a mild metallic movement. High depth creates a strong “jet plane” or “whooshing” sweep.

Flanger depth can work well on guitars, drum fills or special transitions, but it can easily dominate a mix. A deep flanger on a whole drum kit may make the groove sound less solid because the tonal sweep is so obvious.
A phaser creates movement by shifting phase at certain frequencies, producing moving notches in the frequency spectrum. LFO depth controls how far those notches sweep. Low depth gives a gentle shimmer. High depth gives a more pronounced swirling sound.

A modulation effect that uses phase-shifting stages to create moving frequency cancellations, often heard as a swirling or sweeping tone.
Phasers are often used on electric piano, guitar, strings, synths and sometimes drums. With moderate depth, a phaser can add interest without pulling focus. With high depth, it becomes a clear production feature.
Tremolo uses an LFO to vary volume. Depth controls how large the volume changes are. At low depth, the result is a gentle pulse. At high depth, the sound may almost disappear between pulses. With a square-wave tremolo at high depth, the effect can become a hard on/off chopping sound.

Tremolo depth is useful for rhythmic energy. For example, a guitar part might use a quaver-rate tremolo with medium depth to add motion. A synth pad might use slow, shallow tremolo to avoid sounding static. However, a lead vocal with deep tremolo may become hard to understand because the level is repeatedly dropping.
Vibrato uses an LFO to vary pitch. Depth decides how far the pitch moves above and below the centre pitch. Low depth gives natural expressive wobble. High depth gives a more exaggerated pitch bend, which may sound comic, retro or unstable.

Vibrato is particularly sensitive because the ear notices pitch changes quickly. A little depth can add life to a synth lead or electric guitar. Too much can make the part sound badly tuned.
Auto-pan uses an LFO to move a sound between left and right. Depth controls how wide that movement is. Low depth gives small stereo motion. High depth can move the signal hard left and hard right.

Auto-pan can be effective on percussion loops, synth arpeggios or backing textures. Be careful with lead vocals, kick drum, snare and bass. These usually need a stable position in the mix, so deep auto-pan can weaken the centre image.
Filter modulation uses an LFO to move a filter cutoff frequency. Depth controls how far the cutoff sweeps. A low depth may create subtle tonal movement. High depth may create a strong wah, sweep or pulsing synth effect.

This is common in synth bass, dance music, electronic textures and guitar effects. In styles such as acid house, real-time changes to cutoff and resonance are a major part of the sound. LFO depth can automate this kind of movement, though human performance or automation may also be used.
Choosing Musical Depth Settings in a Recording Mix
In Component 1, the aim is not to use the most effects. The aim is to produce a convincing recording that suits the song. LFO depth should be chosen because it helps the part sit in the track, not because the effect sounds impressive in solo.
A good working method is to set the rate first, then raise the depth until the movement is clear, then reduce it slightly while listening in the full mix. This avoids the common problem of setting effects in solo and later finding they are too strong when all instruments play together.
For vocals, use LFO depth carefully. A subtle chorus can add thickness to backing vocals, especially if the dry vocal stays clear in the centre. On a lead vocal, strong pitch or delay-time modulation can damage tuning and intelligibility. If you want a lead vocal to sound wider, consider using low-depth chorus, a short stereo delay, or double tracking rather than heavy modulation.
For electric guitar, LFO depth depends on style. A clean guitar part may suit medium chorus depth for a wide, polished tone. A psychedelic or funk-influenced part may use phaser depth more boldly. A dramatic rock transition may use deeper flanging. In each case, ask whether the modulation supports the arrangement or distracts from it.
For keyboards and synths, greater depth is often acceptable because many synth sounds are designed to move. Pads can benefit from slow, shallow modulation so they do not sound lifeless. Synth leads can use vibrato depth for expression, especially if controlled by a mod wheel. Rhythmic synth parts may use tremolo, auto-pan or filter depth to create motion locked to the tempo.
For bass, deep modulation needs caution. Low frequencies usually provide pitch and rhythmic stability. A chorus with too much depth may make the bass sound out of tune or reduce mono compatibility. If modulation is used on bass, it is often safer to keep the low end centred and apply movement mainly to higher frequencies, for example by using a split bass sound or a subtle chorus above the fundamental range.
For drums, modulation can be a feature effect rather than a constant treatment. A phaser or flanger might work on a drum fill, breakbeat section or transition. Tremolo can create a gated rhythmic feel on percussion. However, deep modulation on the whole kit may weaken the punch of kick and snare, and stereo movement may make the groove feel less focused.
Exam Warning: Do not use LFO depth to hide poor recording or performance quality. A heavily modulated vocal, guitar or bass part may draw more attention to tuning, timing or tone problems.
Depth also interacts with wet/dry mix. Depth controls how far the modulated parameter moves. Wet/dry mix controls how much processed signal is blended with the original. A chorus with high depth but low wet level may still be subtle. A chorus with moderate depth but very high wet level may be obvious.

This distinction is useful in exam answers. If a question asks about depth, do not answer only by saying “turn up the effect.” That could mean wet level, send level, feedback, output gain or depth. Be specific: increasing depth makes the modulation travel further.
You should also check stereo and mono playback. Some modulation effects create width by using phase differences between left and right channels. This can sound impressive on headphones but may lose strength in mono. If the recording collapses poorly to mono, guitars, synths or backing vocals may become quieter or hollow.
Test Tip: When revising effects processing, practise describing settings in terms of cause and effect: “More depth causes wider pitch/delay/filter/level movement, which makes the sound more obvious, wider, more unstable or more rhythmic.”
Recognising and Describing LFO Depth in Exam Work
In written or spoken analysis, depth is usually heard as the strength of the movement. You may not know the exact value, but you can describe whether it is shallow, moderate or deep, and link that to the musical result.
Low depth often sounds subtle. You may notice gentle widening, soft shimmer, slight movement in tone, or a mild pulse. The listener may feel the sound is less static without hearing the effect as a main feature.
Moderate depth is clearly audible but still controlled. A guitar chorus may sound wide and slightly detuned. A phaser may add a noticeable swirl. A tremolo may create a regular pulse without making the part disappear.
High depth is a feature. Pitch wobble, deep volume dips, hard stereo movement, strong filter sweeps, jet-like flanging or obvious wah movement all suggest high LFO depth. This can be musically effective, but it should usually be intentional.
When answering exam-style questions, avoid vague statements such as “the LFO makes it sound better” or “depth changes the effect.” Instead, name the parameter being modulated and describe the audible impact.
For example:
- “The tremolo has high LFO depth, so the guitar volume rises and falls dramatically, creating a strong rhythmic pulse.”
- “The chorus depth is low, adding slight width to the backing vocals without making them sound out of tune.”
- “Increasing the flanger depth would make the comb-filter sweep travel further, producing a more obvious whooshing effect.”
- “The auto-pan depth is too high for the lead vocal because it moves the main focus away from the centre of the stereo image.”
- “A small vibrato depth gives the synth lead expressive pitch movement; a larger depth would create an exaggerated wobble.”
Be careful with terminology. Tremolo is volume modulation. Vibrato is pitch modulation. In guitar equipment, these words have sometimes been labelled inconsistently in older hardware, but in exam writing you should use the standard technical meanings.
Another common mistake is to describe all modulation as “phasing.” Phasing is one specific modulation effect. Chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo and auto-pan are related because they use changing parameters, but they do not all work in the same way.
Exam Warning: Do not confuse LFO depth with reverb size, delay feedback, EQ gain or compression ratio. LFO depth belongs to modulation-based movement, not to every type of effect.
In Component 1, your logbook or production comments should show that your decisions were musical. Instead of writing “I added chorus,” give a reason linked to the sound: “I used a low-depth chorus on the clean guitar to add width while keeping the pitch stable.” This is stronger because it connects the setting to the result.
You should also listen in context. An LFO depth setting that sounds exciting on its own may be too much in a full mix. Deep modulation can clash with lead vocals, blur rhythmic parts, or make a song feel dated if the style does not call for it. On the other hand, very low depth may be too subtle to achieve the intended production effect. The best setting is the one that suits the style, arrangement and role of the part.
