Musical uses in a Component 1 recording
Ping-pong delay should be chosen for a musical reason. In Component 1, effects processing is part of producing a convincing recording. The examiner is not looking for every effect to be used, but for decisions that suit the song, style and arrangement. Ping-pong delay can be effective when it supports the mix without drawing attention to poor editing, tuning or balance.
A common use is on lead vocals. In many pop, rock, electronic and indie styles, a short or tempo-synchronised delay can add space without making the vocal sound as distant as heavy reverb would. A ping-pong delay can be automated so that it appears only on selected words at the end of lines. This keeps the main vocal clear while adding interest in the gaps.
For example, in a chorus, you might automate delay on the final word of each phrase:

Synthesiser parts can also benefit from ping-pong delay. A short synth stab, pluck sound or arpeggiated figure can be made wider and more animated. In electronic dance music, tempo-synchronised delay is often used to make rhythm tracks more interesting.
