Introduction
Pre-delay time is one of the most useful but often misunderstood reverb parameters. Many students can describe reverb as making a sound “bigger”, “more spacious” or “further away”, but exam answers need more precise language. Pre-delay controls when the reverb begins after the original sound. This can make the difference between a vocal that stays clear at the front of the mix and one that becomes washed out by ambience.
Reverb is related to delay because a real acoustic space produces many reflections from walls, floors, ceilings and other surfaces. These reflections arrive at slightly different times and blend into the sound we call reverb. Digital reverbs imitate this by using many short delays, while convolution reverbs use recorded impulse responses to recreate the response of real spaces or devices. Pre-delay sits at the start of this process: it creates a short gap before the reflected sound becomes audible.

What pre-delay time does in a reverb
When a dry sound is played in a room, the listener normally hears the direct sound first. Reflections arrive just after it, depending on the distance between the sound source, the room surfaces and the listener. Reverb processors imitate this behaviour. Pre-delay gives you control over the gap between the direct sound and the reverb effect.
If the pre-delay is very short, the reverb begins almost immediately. This can make the sound feel blended into the room, but it may also blur the attack of the instrument or voice. If the pre-delay is longer, the dry sound has a clearer moment before the reverb starts. This often makes the source seem more present, more defined and sometimes closer to the listener, even though the reverb can still create a sense of space.

A useful way to imagine pre-delay is to picture a lead vocal in a large hall. Without pre-delay, the consonants and beginnings of syllables may be covered by the reverb. With a short pre-delay, the listener hears the start of each word clearly, then the room sound follows. This is why pre-delay is often used on vocals: it allows a large or rich reverb without losing intelligibility.
Pre-delay does not change the length of the reverb tail. That is controlled by the decay time or reverb time. A vocal could have a long reverb decay but still remain clear if there is enough pre-delay before the wet signal enters. Equally, a short room reverb may have little or no pre-delay if the aim is to make a sound feel as if it is naturally placed in a small space.

Pre-delay can also affect perceived depth. A sound with no pre-delay and a high wet level may feel further back because the reflections merge with the direct sound. A sound with a clearer dry attack and delayed reverb may feel more forward. This is not a fixed rule, because level, EQ, panning and decay time also affect depth, but it is a useful starting point for analysis.
Early reflections, clarity and musical space
Reverb is not one single event. It can be understood as a collection of early reflections followed by a denser reverb tail. Early reflections are the first reflected sounds that arrive after the direct sound. They give the listener information about the size and character of the space. A tiled bathroom, a studio live room, a church and a concert hall all produce different reflection patterns.

In many reverb plug-ins, pre-delay delays the whole reverb response. In others, the early reflections and tail may be adjustable separately. For A-Level exam purposes, the main point is that increasing pre-delay creates a longer gap between the dry sound and the reverberant sound. You do not need to describe every internal detail of a specific plug-in unless the question gives you that information.
Pre-delay is especially useful when the source has a strong transient. A transient is the initial burst of energy at the start of a sound, such as a snare hit, a plucked guitar string or the consonant at the start of a vocal word. If the reverb begins too quickly, it can smear this attack. A little pre-delay allows the transient to cut through before the reverb thickens the sound.

For example, a snare drum with a plate reverb and a short pre-delay may sound punchy and spacious. The dry hit remains clear, while the reverb blooms just after it. This can be heard in many rock and pop productions where the snare needs to be both strong and atmospheric. If the pre-delay is pushed too far, however, the reverb may become a separate “flam” or echo after the hit, which may or may not suit the track.
On vocals, pre-delay can help preserve diction. A ballad vocal might use a longer, smooth reverb with enough pre-delay to keep the lyric intelligible. In contrast, a backing vocal pad may use little pre-delay so that it blends into the harmonic texture and sits behind the lead.
Guitars are another common example. A clean electric guitar part with reverb and a modest pre-delay can sound wide and polished without becoming muddy. A distorted guitar, however, already has a dense spectrum and sustain, so too much reverb or unsuitable pre-delay may clutter the mix. In that case, a shorter room reverb or a carefully timed delay might be more suitable.
Test Tip: In an analysis answer, link the setting to the sound source. “A 35 ms pre-delay keeps the vocal consonants clear before the reverb enters” is stronger than “the pre-delay makes it sound better”.
Choosing pre-delay values in practical production
Pre-delay is usually measured in milliseconds. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second, so even small values can be audible in a mix. The exact value depends on tempo, style, source material and the reverb type, but some general ranges are useful for revision.

Very short pre-delay, around 0–10 ms, tends to make the reverb feel closely attached to the dry sound. This can suit room ambience, drum overhead-style space, acoustic instruments, or sounds that should feel naturally placed in an environment. It can also help glue a group of instruments together.
Short to medium pre-delay, around 10–40 ms, is common for vocals, snare drums, guitars and lead instruments. It gives the dry sound a little space before the reverb starts, improving definition while still sounding connected. Values in this range can make a reverb feel polished without drawing attention to itself.
Longer pre-delay, around 40–80 ms or more, becomes more obvious. The reverb may start to separate from the original signal. This can work for dramatic vocals, large snare sounds, sound design, or stylised pop effects. However, if it is not musically timed, it can sound untidy.
Once delay times reach roughly 40–50 ms or more, repeated sound events can start to be perceived as separate echoes rather than only as thickening. This is why pre-delay values in the upper range need careful listening. The effect is not the same as a standard delay line with repeats, but the listener may still notice a distinct gap before the reverb.
A practical example:
- Lead vocal in a pop ballad: a plate reverb with 25–50 ms pre-delay may keep the vocal upfront while giving a smooth tail.
- Snare in an 1980s-influenced rock track: a bright reverb with 30–60 ms pre-delay can make the snare sound large and dramatic.
- Acoustic guitar in a folk mix: a small room reverb with 0–15 ms pre-delay may sound more natural and less produced.
- Synth pad in electronic music: little pre-delay may help the pad blend into a wide atmospheric wash.
- Lead synth or pluck: moderate pre-delay can stop the reverb from covering the rhythmic attack.

Tempo, units and analysing settings in Component 4
Component 4 expects you to interpret numerical data in music technology contexts. Delay time may be measured in milliseconds or as a rhythmic note value when synchronised to the tempo. Pre-delay is normally shown in milliseconds, though some plug-ins allow tempo-based values. If a question gives a pre-delay value, treat it as time data and explain its audible effect.
A useful formula for tempo-related timing is:
At 120 BPM, one crotchet beat lasts:
So a 50 ms pre-delay at 120 BPM is one tenth of a beat. That is not usually heard as a rhythmic echo, but it is long enough to separate the reverb slightly from the attack. At a slower tempo, the same 50 ms may feel shorter relative to the beat; at a faster tempo, it takes up more of the rhythmic space.
You do not normally need to calculate exact note divisions for pre-delay unless the question asks for it. However, recognising the scale of values is useful. A 5 ms pre-delay is extremely short. A 30 ms pre-delay is a clear but still fairly natural separation. A 100 ms pre-delay is likely to be heard as a pronounced gap and may create a stylised effect.
Test Tip: When given a plug-in screenshot, identify the parameter, the unit and the likely result. For example: “Pre-delay is set to 60 ms, so the dry snare transient will be heard before the reverb, increasing punch, although the reverb may sound slightly detached if the track is fast.”
In Section B extended responses, you may be asked to evaluate whether settings are suitable for a task. A strong answer does not only describe the setting; it judges it in context. For example, suppose a lead vocal in a dense pop mix uses a large hall reverb with 45 ms pre-delay and a moderate wet/dry mix. This could be appropriate because the vocal remains intelligible while still gaining size. If the same setting is applied to a fast rap vocal, it may be less suitable because the long reverb and pre-delay could clutter the spaces between words.
Similarly, a drum room reverb with 0 ms pre-delay might help the kit sound cohesive and live. But a snare effect reverb with 40 ms pre-delay could be chosen for impact. Neither setting is automatically right or wrong; the exam answer should refer to the intended sound.
A good analytical sentence often follows this pattern:
- Name the setting.
- Give the value and unit.
- Explain the effect on the sound.
- Judge its suitability for the source and style.
For instance:
“The vocal reverb uses a 35 ms pre-delay, which creates a short gap before the wet reverb enters. This should help the dry vocal attack and consonants remain clear, making the setting suitable for a lead vocal in a busy mix.”
Compare that with a weaker answer:
“The pre-delay is 35 ms, which adds reverb.”
The weaker answer does not show that you understand what the number means or how it affects the production.
Pre-delay can also be confused with ordinary delay effects. Delay is a separate effect that repeats a signal after a set time. Digital delay can use accurate timings, sometimes synchronised to the tempo, and feedback controls can create multiple repeats. Pre-delay inside a reverb is different: it delays the start of the reverberant sound rather than creating an obvious repeating echo. The two are related because reverb is built from many delayed reflections, but in an exam you should keep the terms separate.

Pre-delay is also not the same as attack time on a compressor or gate. Attack time controls how quickly a dynamics processor reacts after a signal crosses a threshold. Pre-delay controls the timing of a reverb response. If you see “ms” in a screenshot, do not assume you know the parameter until you read the label.
Finally, think about how pre-delay interacts with masking. Masking happens when one sound makes another harder to hear, often because they overlap in time and frequency. Reverb can mask lyrics, drum attacks and rhythmic detail. Pre-delay can reduce time-based masking at the start of the sound, because the dry transient happens before the wet reverb arrives. This is one reason it is valued in mixing: it can add space without sacrificing as much clarity.
