The sound gets louder and quieter in a regular pattern, creating a pulsing or throbbing effect. Some tremolo processors also include phase or stereo controls.

Stereo tremolo can overlap with auto-pan. The distinction is that tremolo changes level, while auto-pan moves a sound between left and right by changing the balance between stereo channels. Tremolo also differs from chorus, flanger and phaser, which are named in many music technology revision contexts as modulation effects. Chorus generally creates a thickened sound using slightly delayed and pitch-varied copies. Flanging gives a sweeping comb-filter effect, often described as jet-like. When setting tremolo in a mix, follow a practical order:

  1. Choose the source carefully. Sustained sounds usually show tremolo best.
  2. Set the rate. Decide whether the effect should be free-running or tempo-synced.
  3. Set the depth. Start subtle, then increase only if the effect needs to be obvious.

This is an exam-ready description because it links processing to rhythm and texture. You are not just naming an effect; you are explaining how it changes the production.

Use these sentence starters when revising:

  • “Tremolo has been applied to the ___, causing…”
  • “The rate is slow/fast/tempo-synced, which creates…”
  • “The depth is subtle/deep, so the part…”

Exam Warning: Avoid naming several effects without justification. If you write “chorus, phaser and tremolo” for one sound, but only one is clearly audible, the answer becomes less convincing. Identify the main audible change first.
