## Introduction

During the Victorian period (1837–1901), Britain’s overseas influence grew sharply. The British Empire expanded across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, and Britain became a world power with global trade routes, a powerful navy, and colonies and territories on every continent.

For the Life in the UK Test, you do not need detailed military history of every territory. You do need the main facts: when the Victorian era happened, how large the Empire became, where it expanded, how migration linked Britain and the Empire, and why people began to debate whether expansion should continue.

### What the Empire looked like in the Victorian era

By the late 19th century, Britain controlled or strongly influenced territories across the world. The Empire included places that were ruled directly from Britain, and others that had more self-government, but still recognised the British monarch and had strong links to British law, trade, and institutions.

During the Victorian period the Empire grew to cover all of India, Australia, and large parts of Africa. This expansion was connected to Britain’s industrial growth and trading strength, because industry needed raw materials, overseas markets, and shipping routes protected by the navy.

### Forms of control: colony, crown colony, dominion, protectorate

The Empire was not governed in only one way. Britain used different legal and political arrangements depending on local conditions, the number of British settlers, and strategic needs.

These terms help you interpret exam questions. A dominion had far more self-government than a crown colony. A protectorate was not usually fully “annexed” in the same way as a colony, but Britain still held the most important powers.

### Why Britain expanded overseas

Victorian expansion was driven by several linked motives. For the test, focus on the main reasons.

1. **Trade and industry**
   Britain was a major trading nation. Industrial production depended on reliable supplies of raw materials and access to markets for British goods. Overseas territories supported shipping, finance, and commerce.

2. **Naval and strategic power**
   The Royal Navy protected trade routes. Britain wanted safe sea routes to key territories, especially India, and valued ports that could support ships on long journeys.

3. **Migration and settlement**
   Many people left Britain to settle overseas, especially in territories where Britain encouraged settlement. This helped spread British influence and created strong long-term ties.

4. **Prestige and competition**
   In the 19th century, European powers competed for territory and influence. Many people in Britain saw an overseas empire as a sign of status and strength.

At the same time, expansion created problems. Conflicts in many parts of the Empire could cost lives and money. By the late 19th century, some people argued that Britain had taken on too many commitments.

### The size and reach of the Empire

In the Victorian period the British Empire became the largest in world history, with an estimated population of more than 400 million people. That figure matters because it shows the scale of Britain’s global role by the late 1800s.

A key point for revision is geographical: the Empire was not only “a few colonies.” It included major land areas in Asia and Africa and settler territories such as Australia.

### India and the shift to direct rule (1857–1858)

India became central to Britain’s overseas power. Much of India had been controlled through the East India Company, which combined trading activity with political control. During the Victorian period, Britain tightened control over India.

In 1857 there was a major uprising, often called the Indian Rebellion (or, historically, the Indian Mutiny). After the rebellion, the British government took direct control from the East India Company in 1858. This marks a clear shift: India was now governed more directly as part of the Empire.

### Expansion in Africa and imperial rivalries

In the late 19th century, European competition in Africa increased. Britain expanded its holdings and influence in different regions, including parts of east, west, and southern Africa.

A useful exam-level point is that expansion created frequent conflicts in some areas, and critics argued that these conflicts drained British resources. Notable examples include conflict on India’s north-west frontier and in southern Africa.

The key message for the test is balance: many people in Britain supported the Empire and believed it was a force for good, but by the end of the 1800s the costs and conflicts were increasingly debated.

### The Boer War (1899–1902) and growing doubts

One conflict in particular made public debate sharper: the Boer War (1899–1902) in South Africa. Britain fought Dutch-descended settlers known as the Boers. The war lasted over three years and involved heavy losses, not only in battle but also through disease.

Some people in Britain felt sympathy for the Boers, and the war led more people to question whether the Empire could continue to expand in the same way.

### Migration: leaving Britain and coming to Britain

Empire expansion was not only about territory. It also involved movement of people in both directions.

Many people were encouraged to leave the UK and settle overseas. Between 1853 and 1913, as many as 13 million British citizens left the country. This was one of the biggest population movements in British history. People left for work, land, family opportunities, or a new start, often within the Empire.

Immigration to Britain
People also came to Britain from abroad, including from areas linked to the Empire and from other parts of Europe. A key example is that between 1870 and 1914 around 120,000 Russian and Polish Jews arrived to escape persecution. Many settled in London’s East End and in cities such as Manchester and Leeds.

People from the Empire, including India and Africa, also came to Britain to live, work, and study. Over time, these movements helped create a more diverse society in Britain.

### Trade, free trade, and why it mattered to Empire

Britain’s imperial growth in the 19th century was closely linked to trade policy. During the Victorian period the government promoted freer trade by removing certain taxes on imported goods. A famous example is the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, which allowed cheaper imported grain.

Cheaper imports also helped British industry by reducing the cost of raw materials. Industrial strength, in turn, supported overseas expansion because it increased Britain’s wealth, ships, and manufacturing output for both domestic use and export markets.

While the Corn Laws are not “Empire policy” by themselves, they belong to the same period and help explain how Britain could support such wide global activity.

### Empire and national identity in late Victorian Britain

By the late 19th century, the Empire was part of how many people saw Britain’s role in the world. The source material notes that the great majority of British people believed in the Empire as a force for good.

Popular culture also reflected imperial ideas. For example, Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), born in India, wrote poems and stories set in both India and Britain, and he often presented the Empire in positive terms. Kipling won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and wrote works such as _The Jungle Book_ and the poem _If—_.

You do not need literary analysis for the test, but you should know that Victorian and late Victorian culture often promoted pride in the Empire.

### From Empire to Commonwealth

By the second half of the 20th century, many countries moved from being part of the Empire to becoming independent states, and most transitions were orderly. The UK maintained links with many former colonies through the Commonwealth.
