You do not need specialist geography, but you do need reliable “quick recall” facts: where places are, what they are, and (for a few sites) who looks after them.

### The UK’s nations, capitals, and regional map basics

Start with the core facts you can always build on: the UK has four nations, and each has a capital city. London is both the capital of England and the capital city of the UK.

Capitals to memorise:

- **UK (and England): London**
- **Scotland: Edinburgh**
- **Wales: Cardiff**
- **Northern Ireland: Belfast**

These four places appear frequently in test questions because they are unambiguous and easy to assess.

England is commonly divided into broad regions (used in everyday speech and on maps), such as:

- **North East**
- **North West**
- **Yorkshire and the Humber**
- **East Midlands**
- **West Midlands**

- **South East**
- **South West**

You are not usually tested on regional boundaries, but regional labels help you place major cities in the right part of England.

#### England: key cities to recognise

England has most of the UK population and many of the UK’s biggest cities. You should recognise at least the following English cities and know they are in England:

- **London** (UK capital; south-east England)
- **Birmingham** (West Midlands; central England)
- **Manchester** (North West)
- **Liverpool** (North West; on the River Mersey)
- **Leeds** (Yorkshire)
- **Sheffield** (South Yorkshire)
- **Bristol** (South West; major port city)
- **Bradford** (West Yorkshire)
- **Newcastle upon Tyne** (North East)
- **Plymouth** (South West; on the south coast)
- **Southampton** (South coast; major port)
- **Norwich** (East of England)

You do not need precise counties for all of them, but you should be confident that they are in **England**.

#### Wales: key cities to recognise

Wales has three cities commonly listed for revision:

- **Cardiff** (capital of Wales)
- **Swansea**
- **Newport**

These are all in **Wales**, not England.

#### Scotland: key cities to recognise

Scotland’s main cities you should recognise are:

- **Glasgow**

Northern Ireland’s main city you must know is:

The UK has many protected countryside areas that are open for people to visit. A key fact tested is the number of **national parks** in Great Britain.

A high-frequency fact:

- There are **15 national parks** in **England, Wales and Scotland**.

(You are not usually required to list all 15 by name in the test, but you should know what national parks are and why they exist.)

You should also understand that much of the UK remains countryside even though most people live in towns and cities. Many people visit rural areas for holidays and for activities such as walking, camping, and fishing.

### Who looks after key places: National Trust and similar bodies

Some famous UK places are protected by charities and public bodies. The Life in the UK materials highlight the National Trust because it is strongly linked to public access, heritage, and conservation.

Big Ben is one of the most recognisable UK landmarks and is strongly linked to the UK political system because it sits at the **Houses of Parliament** (the Palace of Westminster) in London.

Key facts:

- **Big Ben** is the **nickname for the great bell** of the clock at the Houses of Parliament in **London**.
- Many people also use “Big Ben” to refer to the **clock** and the **tower**, but strictly it is the bell.
- The clock is **over 150 years old**.
- The clock tower’s official name is **Elizabeth Tower**, renamed in **2012** to mark **Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee**.

Common exam trap: mixing up what “Big Ben” refers to. If a question asks what Big Ben is, the safest answer is the **bell**.

This landmark is also an easy way to confirm your capitals: if you can place Edinburgh Castle, you can place **Edinburgh**, and therefore Scotland’s capital.

### The Giant’s Causeway (Northern Ireland)

This is a classic “natural feature” question: where it is, what it looks like, and how it formed.

Key facts:

- The **Giant’s Causeway** is on the **north-east coast of Northern Ireland** (County Antrim).
- It is a land formation of **columns** made from **volcanic lava**.
- It was formed about **50 million years ago**.
- Many legends are connected to how it formed (stories exist alongside the scientific explanation).

If you are asked “What is the Giant’s Causeway?” the best short answer is: **a natural formation of basalt columns from volcanic activity**.

### The Eden Project (Cornwall, England)

The Eden Project is often tested because it is distinctive and easy to identify in pictures (large dome-shaped biomes).

Key facts:

- The **Eden Project** is in **Cornwall**, in the **south west of England**.
- It contains large **biomes** (structures like giant greenhouses) housing plants from around the world.
- It is also a **charity** running environmental and social projects internationally.

### Putting it together: fast location methods for exam questions

Some test questions are direct (“Where is X?”). Others are indirect, using pictures or a description. Use these quick methods:

1. **Start with nation anchors**
   - Edinburgh → Scotland
   - Cardiff → Wales
   - Belfast → Northern Ireland
   - London → England/UK

2. **Then apply region clues inside England**
   - Cornwall, Plymouth, Bristol → South West
   - Norwich → East of England
   - Newcastle upon Tyne → North East
   - Liverpool/Manchester → North West
   - Leeds/Bradford/Sheffield → northern England (Yorkshire area)

3. **For landmarks, memorise one unique “hook”**
