## Introduction

The Stuart period included one of the most unsettled episodes in British history: a civil war, the removal and execution of a king, a period without a monarchy, and then the return of the monarchy under a new king.

For the Life in the UK Test, you are not expected to know every battle in detail. You do need to understand the main causes (power, money, religion), the sequence of events (Civil War → Commonwealth → Restoration), and the key people and dates.

Although this conflict was centred on England, its effects were felt across the whole of what is now the UK. Scotland and Ireland were drawn in, and decisions made in London affected people in all three kingdoms. This is one reason why the period is important background to later unions between England, Scotland, and Ireland.

### Why Charles I and Parliament went to war

The English Civil War did not begin suddenly. It grew out of long arguments about who should make decisions for the country—especially decisions about taxation, the army, and religion.

Charles I became king in 1625. Like some earlier monarchs, he believed strongly in royal authority. Parliament, however, expected the king to work with it, especially when money was needed. Over time, trust collapsed.

A simple way to remember the causes is:

- **Money**: could the king raise taxes without Parliament?
- **Power**: could the king rule without Parliament and ignore its laws?
- **Religion**: was the country being pushed towards Catholic-style practices?

One key document from this period was the Petition of Right (1628), which stated that the king should not raise taxes without Parliament’s consent and should not imprison people without legal cause. Arguments continued even after this.

Charles I ruled without Parliament for 11 years (1629–1640), often called the “Personal Rule”. Many people saw this as unacceptable, especially when the king tried to raise money in unpopular ways.

Religion increased tension too. Many Protestants, including Puritans in Parliament, feared that religious reforms were moving the Church in a direction they disliked. Conflict became sharper when Charles tried to impose religious changes in Scotland, helping trigger rebellion and costly fighting. Needing money and support, the king recalled Parliament in 1640, but disagreement only grew.

In January 1642, Charles I attempted to arrest five Members of Parliament. This act was widely seen as an attack on Parliament itself. Within months, both sides were preparing for war. In August 1642, Charles raised his standard at Nottingham, marking the beginning of open conflict.

### Royalists vs Parliamentarians and key turning points

The country divided into two main sides:

- **Royalists**, also called **Cavaliers**, supported King Charles I and stronger royal power.
- **Parliamentarians**, also called **Roundheads**, supported Parliament and argued that the king could not rule or raise money without it.

The fighting ran from 1642, but it did not end quickly. Although Charles I surrendered in 1646, later campaigns continued until 1651, including conflict involving Scotland and Ireland.

A major reason Parliament eventually won was better organisation and funding. Parliament also created a new, more professional army.

In 1645, Parliament formed the New Model Army, a national, disciplined force designed to fight effectively across the country. The New Model Army won a decisive victory at the Battle of Naseby in 1645, which badly weakened the king’s main army.

Another significant Parliamentarian victory was at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, which helped Parliament gain control in the north of England. The final major battle is often given as the Battle of Worcester in 1651, when Charles II (the son of Charles I) was defeated and escaped abroad.

The war was not only a military conflict. It was also a constitutional conflict about the nature of government. After Parliament’s victory, the question became: what should happen to the king?

In 1648, Parliament was forcibly reduced to a smaller group (the “Rump Parliament”) after Pride’s Purge, when opponents of trying the king were removed. Charles I was then put on trial.

On 30 January 1649, Charles I was executed. This was an extraordinary event in Europe: a reigning monarch was tried and executed by his own subjects, on the claim that he had acted against the people and the law.

### The Commonwealth and Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate

After the execution of Charles I, the country entered a period without a king.

The monarchy was abolished and a republic was declared in 1649. This period is usually called the Commonwealth, and the years without a monarch (1649–1660) are known as the Interregnum.

Oliver Cromwell was a leading Parliamentarian commander during the Civil War and became the most powerful figure during the years after it. However, government in the 1650s was unstable. Parliaments were called and dismissed, and there were disagreements about religion, law, and how to run the country.

In December 1653, a new system began: the Protectorate. Cromwell became Lord Protector. This was not a monarchy, but it did create a powerful single leader, backed by the army.

Cromwell died in 1658. His son, Richard Cromwell, briefly succeeded him, but he did not have his father’s authority or support. By 1659, Richard had resigned and the country faced political confusion and division. This helped create the conditions for the return of the monarchy.

During this time, the army and different political groups argued about what kind of government should replace the Protectorate. Some wanted a more traditional parliamentary system; others favoured continued military rule. Ordinary people were often more concerned with peace, stability, and the end of heavy taxation and strict religious rules. All of this added to the desire for a clearer and more settled form of government.

### The Restoration of 1660 and why it mattered

By 1660, many people—including important leaders—wanted stability and a clearer settlement. The decision was taken to restore the monarchy, bringing back the king’s son, Charles II.

In April 1660, Charles II issued the Declaration of Breda, which promised (in broad terms) pardon for many who had opposed his father, settlement of property issues through Parliament, and cooperation with Parliament to make restoration acceptable.

In May 1660, Charles II returned to Britain and became king. This is called the Restoration.

The Restoration did not mean the country forgot the Civil War. The conflict left a lasting political memory: it had shown that the monarch could be challenged, and that Parliament’s role—especially in taxation and national decision-making—could not be ignored.

In simple test-ready terms, the long-term direction was towards a system in which the monarchy continued, but Parliament’s importance grew. Later events (after Charles II) would further limit royal power, but the Civil War period is a major step in that story.

For someone preparing for the Life in the UK Test, it is helpful to see this as part of a wider pattern. Earlier struggles under the Tudors had already raised questions about royal power and religion. The Civil War, Commonwealth, and Restoration pushed those questions further, and later in the seventeenth century the Glorious Revolution and the Bill of Rights would confirm limits on the monarchy and strengthen Parliament again.
