Memory cues:

- **Cardiff** is the **capital of Wales** and is in south Wales.
- **Swansea** is also in south Wales (west of Cardiff).
- **Newport** is in south Wales (east of Cardiff).

A common confusion is treating Swansea as the capital because it is a well-known Welsh city. It is not the capital.

These cities sometimes appear in questions about Welsh festivals, the Welsh language, or sporting events such as rugby. Cardiff in particular is home to important national institutions and large stadiums.

#### Northern Ireland: 1 major city to recognise

The major city you need to know is:

Belfast is both:

#### Scotland: 4 major cities to recognise

Scotland has four major cities you need to know:

Memory cues:

- **Edinburgh** is the **capital of Scotland** (east Scotland).
- **Glasgow** is the largest city in Scotland (west Scotland).

A multiple-choice question might include both names to see if you can identify the correct capital.

Some test questions describe a place and expect you to choose the correct city or nation. You can answer many of these without a detailed map by using simple directional thinking and a few anchor points.

Use these as your “mental map pins”:

- **Cardiff** (Wales) — south Wales
- **Edinburgh** (Scotland) — east Scotland

If you can place these four, you can usually place the others relative to them.

That means many multiple-choice questions are really checking whether you can keep these small groups separate.
