You are also expected to recognise some major cities, and to know a few simple facts that often come alongside basic UK geography, such as the currency, key languages, and broad population distribution.

The UK has developed over many centuries. England and Wales were united first, then joined with Scotland to form Great Britain, and later with Northern Ireland to form the UK in its current form. Although the UK is one country, people often feel a strong identity with their own nation and local area.

### The four nations and their capitals

The UK is one country, but it contains four nations. The Life in the UK Test expects you to know each nation’s capital, and also the capital city of the UK as a whole.

Capitals you must memorise:

- **UK capital:** **London**
- **England capital:** **London**
- **Scotland capital:** **Edinburgh**
- **Wales capital:** **Cardiff**
- **Northern Ireland capital:** **Belfast**

A quick way to remember this is: London is the capital of both **England** and the **UK**, while the other nations each have their own capital city (Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast).

The test often checks that you can use the correct term. These terms sound similar, but they do not mean the same thing.

However, for the purposes of the test, focus on the political meaning of the **UK** and the specific definition of **Great Britain**.

The UK shares a land border only with the Republic of Ireland, on the island of Ireland. All its other borders are sea borders, with the English Channel to the south, the North Sea to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and north.

The Life in the UK materials commonly list major cities, and you may be asked to identify which nation they are in or to recognise them on a map.

You do not need to memorise every city in the UK, but you should be confident with the best-known examples, especially the capitals.

#### England: key cities

England is the largest nation of the UK by population, and it contains many of the UK’s biggest cities.

Commonly listed cities in England include:

- **London** (capital of England and the UK)
- **Birmingham**
- **Liverpool**
- **Leeds**
- **Sheffield**
- **Bristol**
- **Manchester**
- **Bradford**
- **Newcastle upon Tyne**
- **Plymouth**

Many of these cities grew strongly during the Industrial Revolution. Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Birmingham became famous centres of manufacturing, trade, and engineering. Wales is on the western side of Great Britain.

Northern Ireland is located on the island of Ireland, to the west of Great Britain.

Belfast has a strong shipbuilding history; the famous ship Titanic was built there in the early 20th century. Today the city is a centre for politics, education, and services for the region.

### Languages across the four nations

English is the main language across the UK, but there are other languages spoken in particular areas. The test may ask you to match these languages to the correct nation.

- **Wales:** Many people speak **Welsh**, which is a different language from English. Welsh is taught in schools and universities in Wales.
- **Scotland:** **Gaelic** is spoken in some parts of the **Highlands and Islands**.
- **Northern Ireland:** Some people speak **Irish Gaelic**.

In every nation you will hear many accents and dialects of English. Accents are about pronunciation; dialects can include different words and grammar.

### Currency and banknotes across the UK

The UK uses a single currency.

- The currency is the **pound sterling** (symbol **£**).
- There are **100 pence (p)** in a pound.

Common denominations are:

- **Notes:** £5, £10, £20, £50

Scotland and Northern Ireland also have their own banknotes. They are valid across the UK, but a shop does not have to accept them.

The UK population is not evenly spread across the four nations. England has the largest share.

Approximate distribution commonly used in study materials:

- **Scotland:** about **8%**
- **Wales:** about **5%**
- **Northern Ireland:** about **3%**

These percentages help with typical test questions such as: “Which country makes up most of the UK population?” (Answer: **England**.)
