For effects processing, “number of repeats” is most closely connected with delay and echo. Introduction

Delay and echo are effects that repeat a sound after a short or long time gap. The original sound is heard first, then one or more delayed copies follow. The number of repeats is the amount of audible echoes that continue after the original signal. In a mix, this can be subtle, such as a single slapback repeat on a vocal, or very obvious, such as a long dub-style echo that continues across several beats or bars.

For Edexcel A-Level Music Technology, you need to do more than name the effect. In Component 4, you may be given settings and asked to analyse their likely impact. If you see a delay plug-in with a high feedback setting, you should be able to explain that the sound will repeat many times, creating a longer echo tail and possibly a rhythmic or atmospheric effect. You should also be able to judge whether that is suitable for the source and style.

Repeats, feedback and the echo tail

The number of repeats in a delay effect depends mainly on how much of the delayed signal is sent back into the delay input. This is usually called feedback, but some devices may label the control as repeats, regeneration, intensity, or echo. The more signal is fed back, the more echoes are produced before the sound becomes too quiet to hear.

A delay with no feedback may produce only one echo. For example, a vocal phrase might be heard once as the dry signal and once again as a delayed copy. Each repeat is normally quieter than the previous one unless the feedback level is extremely high.

The result is called a delay tail: the continuing series of echoes after the original sound.

A simple way to think about delay repeats is:

  • Low feedback: one or two repeats, short echo tail.
  • Medium feedback: several repeats, clear but controlled echo pattern.

  • Very high feedback: repeats may continue for a long time and can risk a build-up or self-oscillation.

In many plug-ins, feedback is shown as a percentage. A feedback value of 0% normally means the delayed signal is not returned to the input, so there is only a single delay repeat. A value such as 25% or 35% gives a few fading repeats. A value such as 70% or 80% gives many repeats and a much longer tail.

The exact number of audible repeats is not fixed by the feedback percentage alone. It also depends on the level of the delay, the source material, filtering inside the delay, the surrounding mix, and how quiet an echo must become before the listener stops noticing it. A sparse mix may reveal more repeats than a dense rock mix.

A useful technical idea is that each repeat is reduced by the feedback amount. If the feedback is 50%, each repeat is about half the amplitude of the previous repeat, which is roughly a 6 dB drop each time. If the feedback is higher, repeats fade more slowly.

For example:

  • A 500 ms delay with one repeat gives one echo half a second after the original.
  • A 500 ms delay with four repeats gives echoes at about 0.5 s, 1.0 s, 1.5 s, and 2.0 s after the original.
  • A 500 ms delay with high feedback may continue for several seconds.

Test Tip: In exam answers, do not just write “it has delay”. Add the effect of the setting: “High feedback produces many repeats, so the vocal phrase will echo for several beats and may create a rhythmic delay tail.”

Number of repeats compared with delay time and wet/dry mix

A common mistake is to confuse number of repeats with delay time. They are related, but they are not the same parameter.

Delay time controls the gap between the original sound and each repeat. Number of repeats controls how many echoes continue after the original.

A delay time of 250 ms creates repeats spaced a quarter of a second apart. A delay time of 750 ms creates repeats spaced three quarters of a second apart.   • Long delay time: a large gap before each echo.
  • Long delay tail: many repeats continuing after the original sound.

The wet/dry mix is another separate parameter. The dry signal is the original, unaffected sound. The wet signal is the processed delay sound. A high wet level makes the repeats more obvious; a low wet level makes them subtle. However, wet/dry mix does not itself create extra repeats. It changes how loud the repeats are in relation to the dry sound.

Now compare this setting:

  • Delay time: 500 ms.
  • Feedback: 75%.
  • Wet level: high.

This would create a much more obvious repeating echo. The vocal may keep repeating across the following words, which could be creative in a breakdown or outro but distracting in a busy verse.

Tempo sync can also affect how the repeats are perceived. If delay time is synced to the song tempo, the echoes fall on musical subdivisions such as crotchets, quavers, dotted quavers, or triplets. This can make repeated delays feel rhythmically intentional rather than random.

A useful formula for tempo-related delay time is:

Delay time for a crotchet in ms=60000BPM\text{Delay time for a crotchet in ms} = \frac{60000}{\text{BPM}}

At 120 BPM:

60000120=500 ms\frac{60000}{120} = 500\text{ ms}

So a crotchet delay at 120 BPM is 500 ms. If there are several repeats, they will fall every crotchet. This can create a strong rhythmic effect, especially on vocals, synth stabs, guitars, percussion hits, and dub-style snare or vocal fragments.

Exam Warning: Do not describe feedback as “making the delay later”. Feedback does not set the time gap. It increases the number of repeats by feeding the delayed signal back into the delay effect.

Audible effects of few, several and many repeats

Different repeat counts create different musical results. In exam responses, you should link the setting to what the listener hears.

A single repeat can create a slapback echo. This is a short, clear echo that follows the dry sound once. It is often associated with older rock ’n’ roll vocal and guitar sounds, but it can also be used in modern productions to thicken a sound without using a long reverb. If the delay time is short, the repeat may feel like a thickening or widening effect rather than a clear echo.

One or two repeats can be useful when clarity is needed. For example, a lead vocal in a pop chorus might have a short or medium delay with low feedback. This adds width and space but does not obscure the words. A guitar solo might use a few repeats to give sustain and size without blurring fast notes.

Several repeats create a more noticeable echo pattern. This can make a part feel rhythmic. A synth stab with a dotted-quaver delay and moderate feedback can create syncopated movement between notes. A vocal phrase at the end of a line can repeat into a gap, filling space between phrases. A snare hit in a reggae or dub-influenced track may echo several times as a creative production feature.

Many repeats create a long delay tail. This can be atmospheric, dramatic, or experimental. It is common in ambient textures, dub mixing, psychedelic guitar sounds, electronic music build-ups, and transitions. Long repeat tails can help create a sense of space that is different from reverb. Reverb often produces dense reflections that blend together, while delay repeats may remain rhythmically distinct.

However, many repeats can cause problems. If the delayed sound continues while new notes or words are being performed, the mix can become muddy. Repeats may mask the lead vocal, clash harmonically with chord changes, or clutter the stereo field. In a fast track, high feedback can quickly become messy because echoes arrive frequently and overlap with new material.

The type of delay also affects how repeated echoes behave. Digital delays can produce clean, accurate repeats. Analogue-style or tape-style delays often make repeats darker, noisier, or more distorted as they continue. Many delay plug-ins include filtering so that each repeat loses some high frequency content, imitating older delay units or tape echo.

In a written answer, compare these two descriptions:

  • Weak answer: “There is delay on the vocal.”
  • Stronger answer: “The delay has high feedback, so the vocal repeats several times after each phrase. This creates a long echo tail and a spacious, rhythmic effect, but it may reduce lyric clarity if used during busy lines.”

The second answer is more useful because it identifies the parameter, describes the sound, and comments on suitability.

Reading delay settings in Component 4 questions

Component 4 may ask you to interpret data rather than simply recall definitions. You might be shown a screenshot of a delay plug-in, a track sheet, or written settings. Your task is to identify relevant information and evaluate the effect on the sound.

When reading delay settings, look for these controls:

  • Delay time, often in milliseconds or note values.
  • Feedback, repeats, regeneration, or intensity.
  • Wet/dry mix, send level, return level, or effect level.
  • Filtering or tone controls on the repeats.
  • Stereo controls such as ping-pong, left/right delay times, or width.
  • Automation, such as feedback increasing at the end of a phrase.

The 68% feedback means several repeats will continue after the original vocal phrase, creating a long delay tail. The high wet level will make the repeats prominent. This could be effective at the end of vocal lines or in a breakdown, but it may mask the lead vocal if used throughout a dense verse.

Notice that this answer does not treat any parameter in isolation. It links time, number of repeats, level, musical context, and possible problems.

Another possible question might give a short slapback setting:

Question: A guitar has a delay time of 90 ms, feedback at 5%, and a low wet level. What is the likely result?

A suitable response would be:

The very short delay time and low feedback mean there will be only one very short repeat, or possibly a subtle thickening rather than an obvious echo. The low wet level keeps the effect behind the dry guitar. This could add body and width without creating a long delay tail.

Test Tip: If asked to evaluate suitability, always refer to the source. Many repeats may suit a sparse dub snare, an ambient guitar, or a vocal ad-lib, but they may be unsuitable for a fast lead vocal line where clarity is needed.

Creative use and control of repeats in production

Number of repeats is not only a technical setting; it is a creative production tool. Producers often automate feedback so that a delay behaves differently in different parts of a song.

For example, a vocal may have low feedback during the verse to keep the words clear, then high feedback on the final word before the chorus. This allows the last word to echo into the transition without cluttering the whole section. The delay can be turned up only at the end of a phrase using automation or a send.

With several repeats, this can form a stereo rhythmic pattern. With too many repeats, it may distract from the centre elements such as lead vocal, bass, kick, and snare.

When comparing delay and reverb, remember that reverb is made from many delayed reflections that overlap to suggest a room or space. Reverb tends to create a wash or ambience; delay creates echoes.
